The Fabric Styling program brings together the worlds of styling, trend forecasting, and related industries such as product development, branding, image consulting, and art direction.
Stylists are the vital link between concept, design, presentation, and finished product. This program prepares you for a variety of opportunities, including how to launch a small business, in a wide range of fields.
Program
Fabric Styling BFA
This program provides a strong foundation in research, concept development, art direction, styling, and trend forecasting. Targeting specific markets, you’ll learn fundamental design concepts and gain project management skills to create a variety of styling and forecasting projects based on references ranging from historical and cultural trends to the current socio-economic climate. In addition to the core Fabric Styling curriculum, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning with courses in art history, fashion history, design, photography, business development, and marketing. A required internship will give you the experience necessary to launch a successful career upon graduation.
To apply for this program you are required to have an AAS, or equivalent college level credits, in an Art & Design program. Learn more about eligibility for this program.
Our Work
Stylists scan for trends and create visual brand and design concepts for a variety of industries. These crucial concepts guide every step that leads to the finished product.

Amber Morgan, Fabric Styling ’14, put her skills to a surprising use—rehabbing a 1973 camper into a “Mani-Camper,” or mobile nail salon that she takes to events.

Outside the Classroom
Students have interned at Banana Republic, Vogue, Ralph Lauren Home, Marc Jacobs, Elle, and Donna Karan. Graduates work as trend forecasters, product development managers, style editors, wardrobe managers, and display and photo stylists. Industries include publishing, theater, television, product development, and computer-related fields. Some graduates go on to master’s degree programs in fields such as visual culture and costume studies.

Learn From the Best
Ruth Jeyaveeran
An expert in textile design and illustration, Jeyaveeran has also written and illustrated two picture books with Houghton Mifflin. She has a BFA in Painting and Illustration and is an assistant professor of Textile Design at FIT. Jeyaveeran has also taught at Parsons, The New School.
Patrick Hughes
Hughes has extensive experience as a fashion reporter and photographer for the NY local news and is the Senior Fashion Editor/ Men's Fashion Writer for IRK Magazine France, an art, fashion, and photography non-profit publication and gallery based in France. His work is linked to historical topics and emerging artists. Following his graduate coursework at Musée Les Arts Decoratifs-Musée de Louvre in Paris, he earned his MA in the History of Decorative Arts and Design from the Parsons/Cooper Hewitt museum program.

Art and Design Gallery
The Art and Design Gallery is open from 9 am until 5 pm, seven days per week. The gallery is located at the northwest corner of Seventh Avenue and 27th Street.
