Nina Garcia '92, fashion director at Marie Claire magazine and a judge on Lifetime TVs Project Runway, was our speaker at the 2010 FIT commencement ceremony. Garcia graduated from FIT in 1992 with a major in Marketing: Fashion Related Industries. Responsible for covering the designer fashion markets of New York, Milan and Paris, she has been at Marie Claire since 2008. Prior to that, she was fashion director at Elle magazine and held positions at both Mirabella magazine and Perry Ellis. She is the author of three best-selling books: The Little Black Book of Style, The One Hundred and The Style Strategy. In addition to her FIT degree, Garcia also holds a bachelor's degree from Boston University.
We awarded honorary degrees to fashion designer Norma Kamali '64 and toy industry leader Alan Hassenfeld, two individuals who have special meaning for the FIT community because of their great individual accomplishments and the influence each has wielded in their respective fields.
Norma Kamali '64, who graduated from FIT with a major in Fashion Illustration, has established a legacy as one of the fashion industry's most prolific and innovative designers and as an astute entrepreneur. She is also a committed New York City citizen who dedicates her time and resources to helping students in the public schools.
Alan Hassenfeld, retired chairman and CEO of the international toy giant Hasbro Industries, has a long record as a progressive industry leader, children's advocate and humanitarian. He has, in addition, contributed generously to the development and growth of FIT's toy design program and its graduates.
