The Illustration portfolio submission consists of written essays and original artwork. We want to understand your creative process in both written and visual components. We ask that you put extra thought and effort into your work to produce and submit impressive art that reflects your special talents and personal means of self-expression. We want to see your best work, who you are, and where you are as a unique and inspired visual artist.
Carefully follow instructions for each requirement requested. Your ability to do so will positively affect your overall assessment. We value your creativity, originality and sense of visual aesthetics.
You will submit two short essays and a portfolio of 14 to 20 pieces of original artwork.

Please respond thoughtfully and note that your answers do not replace the essay that you are required to submit as part of your FIT/SUNY application.
- In 500 words or less, describe one of your best artworks. How did you use your media, technique, composition, lighting, style and/or idea to make the image special?
- In 500 words or less, describe some of the unique qualities you have developed to become a productive artist. What are your greatest strengths, skills and achievements? How have you evolved as an artist over the years? What people, experiences and other sources continue to inspire you to be creative?
PORTFOLIO
Part 1: Your Original Drawings and Painting Created from Direct Observation (7-10 images)
Illustration seeks potential students who demonstrate significant drawing ability. The quality of your Direct Observation Images has the greatest influence in determining the level of your qualifications.
For this project, please submit only paintings and drawings produced directly from life. Applicants to the Illustration AAS program are expected to submit a competitive selection of original work that may include the following subject areas:
- Portraits/Model Drawings (e.g.: drawing of a life model, study of your hand, portrait of a relative)
- Situations (e.g.: people sleeping, eating, playing)
- Conceptual (e.g.: self-portrait as an animal, a person turning to stone, a person as a machine)
- Still Life (e.g.: a study of old shoes, a bowl of flowers, an arrangement of fruits or vegetables)
- Environments (e.g.: at the local grocery store, watching TV with the family at home, downtown at rush hour)
Submit 7-10 images. Include media and size of piece.
Part 2: Your Original Artworks Created from Other Sources (7-10 images)
Please submit drawings, paintings, digital, 3D imagery, and animation that you produced by working from photo reference and/or your imagination, as well as additional artwork derived from direct observation from life. (Note. Each animation should not exceed 30 seconds.)
Submit 7-10 files. Include media and size of piece.
Provide 14-20 items. Images (up to 5MB each), Video (up to 250MB each) PDFs (up to 10MB each) and Models (SketchFab)
