Where Beauty Meets Anthropology
As vice president of product development global marketing for The Estée Lauder Companies, Light works to determine what product launches are next for her brands.
Light describes herself as a sociologist or anthropologist for beauty. “You’re studying the consumer landscape … you have to look at nuances and signals and use this predictive information about what’s going to happen in the future,” she says.
And any successful cultural researcher has to explore what’s happening outside of their own environment. “When you're sitting in your office on Fifth Avenue, it’s a very myopic view of the world,” says Light, who’s lost count of the number of countries she’s visited for work. “Going places and seeing how locals want to appear and make themselves feel beautiful is an unbelievable advantage when studying people—which is my job.”
