Online vs Remote
Online Courses are conducted in a traditional online asynchronous environment: you will log in and complete coursework on your own schedule. Online courses require the same amount of work as classroom courses, but since they are self-paced, they are ideal for students in various time zones or with unconventional work schedules.
In most courses you will be asked to log on a few times a week to participate in online discussions, read lectures, complete weekly assignments, and interact with the instructor and other students. You will complete the course in your own time when it is convenient for you. There is no live instruction in online courses, which is why there is no assigned meeting time and only a date range for the class.
Remote Courses combine both asynchronous and synchronous learning for students who wish to engage with their professors and classmates in real time. In addition to self-paced work, you will be asked to log on during specific class times to participate in online discussions, read lectures, complete assignments, and interact with the instructor and other students.
Technical Requirements
FIT's online courses take place on Blackboard, hosted by Open SUNY. To access your course on a mobile device, use the Blackboard mobile app.
System Requirements for Online Courses
To take an online course at FIT, you should have access to a computer with a reliable high speed, broadband, or DSL internet connection. Expect to be downloading, viewing, and sharing documents, images, and videos.
You will also need:
- an up-to-date browser, such as Chrome (recommended), Firefox, or Safari
- a word processing application that has the capability to save files in Microsoft Word or RTF file format
Please check your course description for additional requirements.
Some courses may have additional software or hardware requirements, such as access
to a scanner or camera.
Testing Your Login Information
- Your welcome email will contain all information needed to access your course: username and password, as well as all the links to login.
- Your welcome email will be sent to you 24 hours after you have enrolled and is processed Mondays through Thursdays. If you register on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you will receive access to your class on the following Tuesday.
- You should test your access immediately upon receipt of your welcome email to ensure that your account is available before the course begins. If you are unable to login, please see our troubleshooting guide below.
- If you have not received your welcome email on a timely basis as stated above, please email [email protected].
Access Your Online Course
Noncredit online courses will not appear in your Blackboard account until the day the class is scheduled to begin. If you login before this date your account will state you are not registered. Please do not panic! This simply means you are early to your class.
At the start of the course, fully familiarize yourself with the syllabus, deadlines, and related course policy documents such as attendance, grading, required reading, and supplemental learning materials.
You can do your classwork at any time of the day, from any place that you can access the Internet.
Depending on the nature of your course, there may be assignments and/or quizzes to complete along with discussion boards to interact with classmates and the instructor.
FIT Library Resources
While enrolled in a noncredit class, you will have limited access to digital databases. You can access these databases by logging in to MyFIT using your FIT username and password. Your welcome email contains information about logging into MyFIT.
Remote courses meet on Blackboard and Webex. You will receive login information and instructions after you register.

Troubleshooting
If you are unable to log into Blackboard OR if you have any issues with your MyFIT account access, please call (212) 217-HELP or email [email protected]. Your email subject line should be CCPS Student-No Ticket Access and your email message should contain the following information:
- your full legal name
- your FIT ID number (sent in your welcome email)
- a brief description of the issue you've encountered
If you are requesting a password reset, you will need to send a photo of an ID, such as a driver's license, passport, student ID card, etc. You are welcome to block out any confidential identification numbers in the photo.
