HS Patternmaking Technology Course Descriptions
Discover how to transform designer sketches or pictures of outfits into real garments and explore a career in patternmaking technology, patternmaking, technical design, grading, or as a production executive or assistant designer.

HPM 069 Level 1 Patternmaking and Sewing (All grades)
Learn introductory level sewing skills, how to work with pre-made patterns, and how to make basic modifications. Projects
include a basic top and bottom, gender-inclusive. *Projects and class schedule may
be adjusted to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in course.
HPM 070 Level 1 Patternmaking and Sewing (All grades)
Learn introductory level sewing skills, how to work with pre-made patterns, and how to make basic modifications. Projects include two tops and one skirt. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted
to reflect the abilities and pace of the students in course. Gallery
HPM 071 Level 2 Patternmaking and Sewing (All high school grades)
*Prerequisite: HPM 067, HPM 069, HPM 070, HAP 025, HAP 026, HAP 017 OR HAP 154 or
HPM 101 or patternmaking experience
Learn how to make a basic top and skirt pattern from measurements taken in class and
then make a basic dress for your final project. Projects include one top, one skirt,
and one dress. *Projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the abilities
and pace of the students in course.
*To waive the prerequisite for course HPM 071 you need to submit an email to [email protected]
with a description and a photograph of a self-developed pattern. Make sure to include
your full name and date of birth. Please note that this is in addition to the online
registration, which has to be completed by all Precollege students.
HPM 080
Creating Digital Fashion Design Flats in Adobe Illustrator
Learn how to conceptualize a fashion line and create fashion garment flat specs using
the fashion industry standard software Adobe Illustrator. These “flats” are standard
drawing requirements in the fashion industry and for most fashion design portfolio
requirements. You will create a 10-piece garment collection for a client of your choosing
and create a visual presentation of this collection including your customer profile,
color story, mood board, fabric board, and silhouettes using the computer.
HPM 101 Introduction to Patternmaking
Patternmaking is a technical design skill necessary for any aspiring fashion designer.
Learn how to use and modify existing patterns to create a simple top or bottom. Develop
techniques to improve fit for a variety of body types and discover how to make your
own basic patterns. Basic sewing skills will be introduced as students develop their
final projects. Note: The projects and class schedule may be adjusted to reflect the
abilities and pace of the students in course. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HPM 069)
