HS Textile/Surface Design Course Descriptions
Where do the patterns on products come from? Textile surface designers create designs
and patterns on all types of surfaces, from wallpaper to fabric to dinnerware. In
these courses, you will explore a career as a designer, colorist, stylist, studio
director, or freelance entrepreneur.
HTS 100 Screen Printing: Basics
Screen printing is an exciting technique used to transfer original art onto paper,
canvas, apparel, or accessories. Learn the studio basics of this process using water-based
inks, metallics, opaques, and glitter. You will create your own stencils to produce
work for your portfolio or professional development. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HTS 154)
HTS 101 Screen Printing: Creative Techniques
Screen printing is an exciting technique used to transfer original art onto paper,
canvas, apparel, or accessories. Learn experimental techniques such as direct stencil,
discharge, computer manipulation of original photographs, repeating patterns, and
metallic foil. You will create your own stencils to produce work for your portfolio
or professional development. (You can skip this summer class if you've already taken HTS 156)
HTS 154 Introduction to Screen Printing
Learn how to create your own screen prints using your original art, on multiple surfaces
through various techniques using water based inks, metallics, opaques, and glitter.
You will work in a professional screen printing studio with equipment such as the
multi-arm carousel printer. Create inspired pieces for your portfolio or personal
development (for surfaces such as T-shirts, jeans, clothing, books, etc.) and replicate

HTS 156 Experimental Screen Printing
Learn how to create original screen prints through experimental techniques such as
direct stencil, discharge, computer manipulation of original photographs, repeating
patterns, and metallic foil. You will work in a professional screen printing studio
with equipment such as the multi-arm carousel printer. Create inspired pieces for
your portfolio or personal development and replicate the techniques you learned in
this class at home.
HTS 171 Weaving: Create Fabrics for Fashion and Fine Art
In this challenging and engaging beginners weaving class, you will explore your artistic
point of view through the development of woven textiles. Using fundamental weaving
and tapestry techniques, you will be introduced to designing woven fabrics for fashion
and creating fine art wall hangings. Learn how to set up a hand loom and ultimately
broaden your portfolio with original woven pieces. You will also gain insight into
the many careers available designing woven textiles.
HTS 173 Designing with Pattern
Let your creativity run wild by learning how to create and apply patterns to just
about anything! Patterns will be visually mapped to products using Adobe Photoshop
to make it look like the finished product actually exists. You will develop a print
collection (plaids, florals, stripes, geometrics, randoms or whatever) and use that
art to generate an original product line. You can design for fashion apparel, accessories,
interiors for home or business, consumer products such as skateboards, yoga mats,
or anything else imaginable. From pattern concept to desired product, you will create
a product line that is your own creation. Designing with Pattern Gallery
HTS 174 Knit Design for Fashion and Textiles
Create original fashion/textile knit designs using computer aided design software
that is at the leading edge of flat knitting technology. Discover and create pointelle
and cable patterns, create an original seasonal color palette, and learn how to develop
various stripe arrangements. Final creations will then be printed on high-quality
printers and can be used on presentation boards with yarn samples to show garment
swatches. Students will also learn how to map their knit designs onto their original
croquis* using Adobe Photoshop. Knit Design Gallery *Note that only original (not traced) croquis may be submitted towards FIT's Fashion
Design degree program application. It is recommended that students take a selection
of the following Fashion Design courses such as HAR016: Creating the Fashion Figure,
HAR087: Advanced Fashion Design Art II, or HAR089: Fashion Design Portfolio III to
augment the skills learned in this course.
HTS 175 Flowers and Fashion
This drawing and mixed media course explores the use of flowers in fashion and interiors
markets. You will develop floral drawings from life and photographs using a variety
of media including pencil, charcoal, and gouache. Floral designs from the runway and
home markets will be analyzed for color, layout and technique. Projects may be included
in portfolios for a variety of FIT majors to satisfy both decorative design and observational
drawing techniques.
HTS 176 From Museum Inspiration to Textile Design
You will hand-paint an original textile collection on paper, inspired by works you
discover during a museum visit. Exploring the museum in teams, you will observe and
collect personal design ideas based on paintings, objects, textiles, and spaces you
discover. As you learn about the creative process and use the past to design for the
present, you will produce three textile designs for an apparel collection that can
be included in an admissions portfolio. Part history class and part scavenger hunt,
learn how to jump-start an idea to develop one-of-a-kind apparel textiles.
