The Creative Life: Eight Standout Works by Faculty Artists
“Growing up, there were no books with kids that looked like me. The lack of representation had an effect. I want to inspire children of African descent to be artists and storytellers.”
Progress rarely runs in a straight line. Neither does our approach to preparing students for a demanding creative economy. Skills...relationships...knowledge...drive...they all intersect at the Creative Nexus that is FIT.
It's a powerful network where artists collaborate with executives, faculty influence business, and the working world informs the classroom. It's where academic and professional partnerships form around new ideas that spark change. It's where students design and produce and learn and connect. And our New York City location enables the coolest collaborations: museums, libraries, zoos, universities, hospitals, and media organizations are just some of our partners.
The Creative Nexus is a virtuous circle of alumni, industry, students, and faculty exploring and growing and challenging the status quo. Are you ready?
What do you get when you combine a world leader in artificial intelligence technology with a world leader in fashion design education? Joint research, innovative curricula, and an ongoing relationship that will change the future of the industry.
When the Girl Scouts of the USA wanted to redesign their uniforms for the first time in over two decades, they turned to FIT's Fashion Design students for help. The updated 18-piece mix-and-match wardrobe launched in summer 2020, giving the girls a fresh new look.
If you write a jaw-dropping piece of historical research for class, your FIT professor might just push you to submit it for presentation at a conference. Jiyun Kim, Art History and Museum Professions ‘20, did just that, leading a seminar about ancient tablets that detailed early fashion and textile trades.
What makes FIT unlike any other community? A dedicated faculty with a blend of industry expertise and academic credentials. Alumni with an uncommon approach to their careers. Industry connections that create amazing opportunities—like competitions that give students professional-level experience before graduation. And so much more! See our Points of Distinction below for the big picture.
Where It All Adds Up
FIT is a catalyst for people who shape the creative economy. Our alumni, faculty, and industry partners break ground, spark change, and make things happen.

When it comes to living your values, let's be honest — it's not always easy. But faculty and students are committed to FIT's core strategic priorities of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Innovation; and Sustainability, and promote them through inspiring research and projects.
The Creative Nexus is FIT's fuel. It's behind everything we do, from The Museum at FIT's engaging exhibitions to Hue magazine's vibrant stories to the FIT Foundation's vital partnerships that support it all.
For Disney on Broadway's 25th anniversary, 10 FIT students reconceptualized some of the most iconic Disney characters on stage and screen. Our networks run deep across industries, opening doors and opportunities no matter your major.
