Delta Alpha Pi

On September 23, 2013, the Office of Disability Services (FIT-ABLE) satisfied the requirements to become the Gamma Theta Chapter of the Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society. 

The purpose of the honor society is to provide an opportunity to change the negative stereotyping associated with disability by recognizing students with disabilities for their academic accomplishments. In addition, this honor society facilitates development of skills in leadership, advocacy, and education for participating students. 

What does Delta Alpha Pi mean?

delta alpha pi seal Delta (D) for Disability, but also the triangle symbol for strength. Members of Delta Alpha Pi demonstrate strength as leaders on campus to help break down the barriers of negativism. Also, they serve as mentors and role models for other students with disabilities. 

Alpha (A) for Achievement.  Alpha is the beginning and academic achievement must come first.  But also for Advocacy because students must advocate for themselves before they can advocate for others.  Members of Delta Alpha Pi enhance advocacy skills for themselves and for the rights of all individuals with disabilities to be included fully in society.

Pi (P) for Pride, pride in academic achievement and in other accomplishments—not just as a students with disabilities, but as members of the college community. Pi is a mathematical symbol that is learned in elementary arithmetic classes, so Pi is an appropriate symbol for education. Members of Delta Alpha Pi participate in activities designed to educate the community and society regarding the need to apply the principles of universal design in learning. 

Eligibility

Following is a list of all of the criteria required for membership in the honor society:

  1. Present with a documented disability and work with one of the advisors in the FIT-ABLE office.
  2. Complete a minimum of 15 credits.
  3. Maintain an overall GPA of 3.10.
  4. Demonstrate an interest in disability issues.

Recognition

Delta Alpha Pi members are recognized during a pinning ceremony held each spring semester.  Members are instrumental in promoting disability awareness on campus through a disability awareness week and other events throughout the school year.  They also mentor new incoming students who have registered with the disability services office to help them navigate the school, show them around the city, and introduce them to other students on campus. 

Delta Alpha Pi members are allowed—and encouraged—to wear the Delta Alpha Pi cord colors during commencement ceremonies.
